A few weeks after my second daughter was born, the dreaded hospital bills starting trickling in. The final amount owed after insurance was $2,248.09. I had heard about the medical bill negotiation service that the Take Command Health membership plan offered and out of sheer curiosity, I decided to give it a shot.
After I shared the necessary paperwork, my bill negotiation "ninja" reviewed my bills for errors and provided an estimated savings report to show how much money could be potentially saved. She told me they could save me $427.05. Not bad!
So how does it work?
Take Command Health uses a proprietary technology platform to analyze bills for errors along with a team of expert medical billing advocates who negotiate on the consumers’ behalf. Apparently a whopping 80% of the bills have errors! So it is our right and our duty as consumers to make sure what we pay is fair for the services provided instead of blindly handing over our credit card.
Does this make me look cheap?
I would never have wanted my wonderful OB or any of the nice nurses who helped me during my recovery get shortchanged. My negotiation ninja assured me that they negotiate a FAIR price, not a steal of a deal, when sending settlements to the hospital.
The ninja who negotiated on my behalf will remain anonymous to protect the names of the fabulous. Ok, her name was Gina. And she rocked. Not only did she communicate with me every step of the way on our three month negotiation adventure, she got the job done, saving me more than the original estimate had suggested. My total savings was $535.09, which is $100 more in savings than originally estimated! Well done, Gina. Well done.
Worth the wait
My daughter was born in early January, and I just received my final statement from the hospital with a zero balance. So this took a while – mostly because the hospital billing department was playing hard to get, ignoring phone calls, faxes and emails. But it was well worth the wait!
When I finally paid my reduced bill through the billing department at the hospital, the rep on the phone told me he had never heard of a bill negotiation service. I politely told him he needs to get used to it since I will be telling all my friends about this awesome service! Take Command Health helped me be “in the know” and I am so grateful!
Does it cost anything?
Normally medical bill negotiation services take a 30% cut of the savings, but through the Take Command Health membership plan, this service is available to members for free! FREE. You read that right.

I wrote this blog because I care about ideas (big and little) that can help fix our healthcare system. I used to work on projects for Kaiser Permanente and the Parkland Health & Hospital System so I've seen the system inside and out. It's so important that consumers keep up with industry shifts and changing health insurance regulations. I'm also Take Command Health's Content Editor and a busy mom.
