Individual health insurance accepted at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix

Open enrollment season is underway and is shortened to only 6 weeks this year! Dec 15, 2017 is the deadline to enroll in a health plan for 2018! As you may have heard Arizona lucked out this year in that the average premium increase is around 2%, compared to 34% nationwide. Our guide to Arizona’s 2018 open enrollment explains which carriers can be found in Arizona this year and what type of plans they are offering.  Here's what you need to know if you are set on keeping your coverage at Mayo Clinic, one of Phoenix's leading hospitals.

Mayo Clinic isn't the friendliest for those on the individual market. They do not accept either of the plans offered on the exchange for 2018. Individuals can purchase off-exchange plans either through Cigna (HMO) or Medishare (verify your benefit level with insurance before your visit).

If you go the Cigna HMO route, it is important to note that Mayo Clinic has a special notice about HMOs on their site. Mayo states that an HMO will not typically pay for Mayo Clinic services without prior authorization from your insurance company. Your physician's referral alone does not necessarily constitute an authorization from your HMO.

In addition, Mayo Clinic requests a deposit for all unauthorized services. Deposits are based on an estimate of the cost of services you or your physician request and are not necessarily payment in full. If insurance authorization for your services at Mayo can be verified with your HMO prior to services being rendered, you will not be required to make a deposit for the authorized services.

It is advised that individuals on the Cigna HMO plan speak with Cigna about the cost of care and authorizations needed to receive services at Mayo.

Buyer Beware: Don’t be surprised by out of network charges!

We know our customers are savvy when it comes to saving money on health insurance and medical expenses. That’s why they use Take Command Health to help them shop and compare individual health insurance plans quickly and easily!

But did you know that out-of network charges can still be incurred even when you are at an in-network facility? Even though you are receiving care at an in-network facility, some of the health care practitioners may not be in-network! What does this mean for you? It means you need to confirm with everyone you meet with that they are in network- from the anesthesiologist, radiologist, and lab! At the end of your service, you may receive a balance bill from the nonparticipating facility-based physicians and health-care practitioners for amounts not covered by patient’s insurance plan.
